Briar grabbed Newton a beer and made herself some herbal tea before ushering him out to the veranda at the back of her cottage.

It was her favourite place, cosy at any time of year. It could be gloriously sunny, or moody in bad weather, like it was now with the storm clouds rolling in and the brisk wind stirring the plants in her garden.

She’d been seated at the wooden table when Newton arrived, studying her grimoires in preparation for the evening ahead. Although Alex had decided on a spell, she always liked to refresh her knowledge for special events, just in case. She was also trying to shake off the odd mood that had descended on her all day. A feeling of impending doom and worry. She felt foolish. She had enough faith in her magic to feel safe, so she wasn’t sure what was going on.

She brushed it aside and focussed on Newton who’d taken a seat across the table, glad that he’d arrived to take her mind off her worries. However, he looked fairly preoccupied himself. He glanced around the room, taking in her vintage decorations and shabby-chic design that she guessed he found twee. That was okay. She loved it.

“Bad day, Newton?”

He focussed on her, looking guilty. “You could say that. These hunters that have arrived, plus the two dead ones, and that bloody Stormcrossed Manor… Creepy as hell, and that old woman looked…” He froze, face flushing. “Forget I said that. Are you okay? No other visits from that woman?”

“The supposed hunter? No.” She tapped her grimoires, the familiar scents enveloping her as she leaned over them. “I’m just immersing myself in old family magic in preparation for tonight. It comforts me. You know what we have planned?”

“Yes. Alex told me. He invited me to the curry, too. Phoned as I was leaving work. At El’s, I think, later.”

“Yes, very late. Reuben and El are up to something.” Briar considered his call. “He wouldn’t elaborate, so who knows what that means!”

“That’s okay,” Newton said brusquely. “I’m sure we’ll find out tonight. I wanted to speak to you alone first. It’s important.”

Briar’s eyes widened with surprise, and for one ridiculous moment, a flash of hope ran through her that he might ask something personal, before she quickly squashed it again. A date, perhaps? What was she thinking? He’d rejected her, and she him, and now they were in this stupid friendship stalemate. Plus, she was seeing Hunter.

She forced a smile. “Now I’m intrigued! Go on!”

“You know we do all sorts of research on cases—background checks, bank stuff, family history, et cetera. Well, we did some on the family who lives in the manor, and we found something we didn’t expect. It involves you.”

Worry gripped her again, and Newton’s concerned, grey eyes bore into hers. “Bloody hell, Newton. You’re spooking me, now. Do you think I’m behind some of this?”

“Don’t be bloody stupid! No. It’s something else.”

“Spit it out, then! The anticipation is killing me!”

“This is going to sound odd, but trust me, we’ve double-checked everything.
